About Richard D. Meyer, 88, of California, Mo., passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

He was born in Camden County, Mo., on April 3, 1924, the son of Harry A. and Fannie (Stevens) Meyer, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married on February 14, 1953, in St. Louis, Mo., to Louise Lipscomb, who survives of the home.

He graduated from Hughesville High School, did his undergraduate work at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo., and received his graduate degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. He was a basketball coach for many years, and was a principal in the California, Mo., Public School district from 1957-1986. He was a member of the California United Methodist Church and the California Masonic Lodge #183. He loved quail hunting, enjoyed farming and was quite the storyteller. He served in the United States Marine Corps, serving in World War II in the South Pacific. He was a life member of VFW, American Legion and the Marine Corps League.

He is survived by one son, Richard D. Meyer of Sedalia, Mo.; four daughters, Glenda Joyce Nelson and husband Richard of Kearney, Mo., Diane Meyer and husband Robert Tate of Chandler, Ariz., Janis Lane of Napa, Calif., and Sue Meyer and husband Mike Hansen of Apex, N.C.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, G.W. Meyer of Mora, Mo. He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Doyle Meyer; and one sister-in-law, Darlene Meyer.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California, Mo. Burial with full military honors will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sedalia, Mo. Officiating will be Rev. Eric Moore. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., with a Masonic Service following, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Marine Corps League of Jefferson City, c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. Oak, California, MO 65018.
