About Me VISIT DESMOND'S PAGE HERE: https://www.facebook.com/DesmondisAmazing ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== ABOUT ME - THE BASICS ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== I was born in Illinois, but mostly raised in Colorado and California. I have moved all over the United States in my adult life, but I will always consider Southern California, particularly the Los Angeles/Orange County area, to be my home. My heart belongs in Hollywood. I have two kids – a teenager and a grade school aged child. There is never a dull moment, believe me. My daughter is extremely talented in writing poetry. She is also very funny. If she plays her cards right, I think she could have a successful future in journalism. My son wants to be a ballet dancer and a fashion designer. He can be seen dancing in drag in RuPaul's Drag Race Season Five Winner Jinkx Monsoon's video "Bacon Shake". He has been nicknamed "the boy who won NYC Pride". I have an older brother and sister. I have made my living working as office support for the past 15 years+. Some day in the future, I’d like to turn the tables 360 degrees and go back to school to earn a degree in Fashion. I would like to create fashions inspired by the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. I would also like to create costumes for showgirls, burlesque performers, drag queens, circus acts, and other entertainers, if I am skilled enough. My former employment includes various office work and as a nursing assistant in nursing homes. I was also an Animal Care Specialist in the United States Army, where I was nicknamed "Private Hollywood" (a most fitting nickname, in my opinion). Also looking to the future, I would love to get involved with a WWII reenactment group or a living history group. I absolutely love learning about WWII. ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== FILMS AND TELEVISION ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== I live for films made before 1950, particularly the “pre-code” films made during the 1930s. Some of my favorite pre-code films are Baby Face, Hold Your Man, Sign of the Cross, Three on a Match, The Story of Temple Drake, Dante’s Inferno, Pandora’s Box, Skyscraper Souls, The Blue Angel, Madam Satan, Waterloo Bridge, Night Nurse, Platinum Blonde, Tarnished Lady, Blonde Venus, The Bitter Tea of General Yen, Going Hollywood, Midnight Mary, I’m No Angel, and Ecstasy. I am also a fan of Busby Berkeley’s pre-code musicals. I am a huge fan of the film Sunset Blvd. for the way that it portrayed fading Hollywood stars. I marvel at the fact that the story line parallels Gloria Swanson’s true life so much, as well as Eric Von Stroheim’s. This movie gives me chills. I like silent films, although I do prefer talkies over silents. Being a fan of film, I cannot discount the importance of silent films and the unique look they provide at a blossoming industry. Some of my favorite silent films are Wings, Intolerance, Greed, Queen Kelly, The Toll of the Sea and Beyond the Rocks. I also enjoy Buster Keaton’s early comedy shorts and films. Believe it or not, there are modern age films that I enjoy, such as The Informers, The Notebook, and The Dreamers. Recently I saw the German film “Generation War” and I really enjoyed it. I am a huge fan of “bad movies”, “B-movies”, and “cult classics”. I love any film from John Waters, Ed Wood, or Tommy Wiseau. I love cult films, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Warriors, and A Clockwork Orange. As far as television is concerned, I enjoy documentaries, paranormal related shows, shows that show people doing funny things, falling or failing, non-violent animal shows, shows about archaeology, and shows about history. I like the reality shows RuPaul’s Drag Race, America's Next Top Model and Project Runway. One of my favorite people that I used to watch in California and now have to watch on YouTube is Huell Howser. I loved his shows and his infectious energy and personality. He really seemed like a truly wonderful guy. Favorite Actresses: Jean Harlow, Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, Anna May Wong, Bette Davis, Tallulah Bankhead, Barbara Stanwyck, Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, Joan Fontaine, Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson Favorite Actors: Rudolph Valentino, Jack La Rue, James Cagney, Eddie Nugent, Eric Linden, Warren William, Buddy Rogers, Glenn Ford, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Robert Taylor, James Darren, Clark Gable, Michael Pitt, Austin Nichols, Francesco Casale, Franco Interlenghi ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== MUSIC ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== My musical tastes are all over the place. Mostly, I listen to music from the 1920s through the mid-1940s. This includes vocals, jazz, dance bands, sweet bands, crooners, orchestras, big bands, blues, novelty numbers...I’m not too picky as long as it has a catchy tune. After all, it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing! To make a list of my favorite bands from this era would be non-ending. I’ll try to name a few of the more well known: Cab Calloway, Bix Beiderbecke, Helen Kane, Bessie Smith, Lucille Bogan, Al Bowlly, Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, Boswell Sisters, Fred Waring, Frank Sinatra, Annette Hanshaw, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Andrews Sisters…the list goes on and on. My favorite crooner of all time is Johnny Desmond. I do enjoy some of the swing revival bands as well, such as Royal Crown Revue and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and some of the modern crooners such as Harry Connick, Jr. and Michael Bublé. I love the anarcho-punk bands from the late 1970s – mid-1980s. I never tire of listening to Crass and I am a huge fan of Rudimentary Peni. I enjoy other punk bands as well, but not many of the modern ones - mostly stuff from the 1980s. There are other genres of music I listen to as well. I enjoy early Jamaican music, such as rocksteady, reggae, and ska. I enjoy 80s music. My favorites are The Smiths, Adam Ant, Simple Minds and Culture Club. Sometimes I feel like listening to disco. If it feels good to me, I like it. ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== LITERATURE ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== I love reading books and I collect so many books that I am beginning to become overtaken by them in my small apartment. I am a fan of non-fiction, mostly. My favorite topics are Hollywood or Los Angeles history related, beauty, hairstyling, fashion, architecture, biographies, art deco and historical photography. Some of my favorite authors are Oscar Wilde, Dorothy Parker, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Lord Byron, Percy Shelly, Charles Bukowski, E.E. Cummings, A.A. Milne, and Jim Morrison. ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== HOBBIES ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== I don’t have a tremendous amount of time between being a parent and being a working mom for hobbies. But when I do have the time, I guess I enjoy the simplest of things. I like going to the movies (especially going to the Film Forum), hanging out with friends, going sailing, going to museums, and going to zoos. I like collecting items relating to the Golden Age of Hollywood and especially relating to my favorite actress Jean Harlow. I also collect beauty culture from the early twentieth century. My favorite vintage cosmetic to collect is Max Factor. I like the beauty culture courses from Joe Bonono and Sylvia of Hollywood. I also collect items from the Queen Mary (the ocean liner), vintage ViewMasters and other stereo viewers and I collect squirrels. If I had the time, I think I would like to dabble in writing poetry, taking black and white photographs, and learning to tap dance. I like to go to drag queen shows and I really enjoy these. I never realized the amount of artistic talent it takes to do drag before going to these shows. Amazing. And so funny! ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== PETS ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== 1 Parakeet - Clara Bowgie 1 Chinchilla - Harriet Ruby Miranda 1 Degu - Benny 2 Cats - Abbadabba and Benjamin ‘Bugsy” Siegel ‘Sea Legs’ Bunpei Brunell Napoles ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== THINGS I LOVE ===+++===+++===+++===+++=== My most favorite thing right now is the immersive theatre experience “Sleep No More” at the McKittrick Hotel. I have been to other immersive theatre performances here in NYC, but I still like “Sleep No More” the best. Foods I love are Krispy Kreme donuts, authentic Mexican food, marshmallows, and ice cream. My favorite beverages are Diet Coke and absinthe. My favorite cocktails are the Sidecar, champagne cocktails and Death in the Afternoon. I love sailors. To me, sailors are the symbol of America. Additionally, I am a fan of all sorts of maritime and nautical things, such as myths, legends, and folklore, sailor tattoos, and ships. I love B-17 Flying Fortress planes. They are also an iconic symbol of America to me. I love Peking Opera. The costumes, the music, the singing...all of it...is so beautiful to me. I love abandoned places. They hold some sort of fascination to me. I would like to become an “urban-archaeologist”, but I am not brave enough...not because I am scared of the abandoned place...because I wouldn't want to g...(read more)
