About Tom Schwenker, 63, of Burlington, died at 6:45 pm Sunday, August 14, 2011, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 15, 1947, in Burlington, he was the son of Edwin and Mildred Eversman Schwenker. On February 3, 1968, he married Joyce Ann Boeding in West Point, IA.

Tom was Vice President and Loan Officer for Midwest Federal Savings & Loan Association and then Vice President and Loan Officer for Midwest One Bank.

He was a 1965 graduate of Burlington High School and a 1971 graduate of Southern Colorado State College.

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving from 1968 until 1972.

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, associate member of Burlington Board of Realtors, served on the Board of Directors of Burlington Steamboat Days, for which he was a Past President and Treasurer, the Business Retention & Expansion Committee for the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Des Moines County Zoning Commission, member and Past Director of the Burlington Kiwanis Club, was current President of the Board of Directors of Burlington Housing Partnership, 3rd Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #568, member of the Burlington Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, Burlington Elks Lodge, AMVETS Post 0029, past member and Treasurer of Burlington Optimist Club, past member and President of Southeast Iowa Chapter 221, Institute of Financial Education, and past member and president of Burlington Jaycees. Tom enjoyed hunting, golfing and vacationing twice a year at Osage Beach with his wife, Joyce. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Dale Earnhardt.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; one son, Brian (Mara) Schwenker of Newton, IA; two grandchildren, Brenna and Breyton; three brothers, Terry Schwenker, Joel (Deb) Schwenker, and Mike (Melissa) Schwenker, all of Burlington; one sister, Judi (Ken) Weinreich of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Randy Schwenker, and one sister in-law, Dori Schwenker.

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:00 PM Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Schwenker will be 10:00 AM Thursday, August 18, 2011, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Anthony J. Herold as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. John's cafeteria following the interment.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Hospice House and Great River Hematology and Oncology.
