Service description
Enlisted in Navy directly out of high school in June, 1969. Attended school in Pensacola, Florida for training as Cryptologic Technician. First duty assignment as Sidi Yahia, Morocco where I served 3 years. From Morocco, now a 2d Class Petty Officer, Went to Northwest, Virginia for 2 Years. From Northwest went to Hawaii for 3 years where I was promoted to 1st Class Petty Officer. From Hawaii my next assignment was Guam, Marianas Islands. On Guam I was promoted to Chief Cryptologic Technician (Communications), finished last several courses to complete degree, and obtained instructor certification and taught for Los Angeles Community College. In 1980 I was selected for Officer Candidate School and left Guam for Newport, Rhode Island. I was commissioned Ensign, United States Navy, in February of 1981 with a designator of 1610 - Cryptology (a Naval Intelligence career field). My first commissioned assignment was Homestead, Florida. From Homestead I made numerous deployments into and around Central America: Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and so on. Also helped design and implement new computer systems environment to automate much of the front-end work of Naval Cryptology. Promoted to Lieutenant (junior grade) and Lieutenant while in Homestead. From Homestead my next assignment was Rota, Spain. In Rota I was communicaitons officer and also direct support officer where I both deployed and directed the aircraft, surface ship, and submarine deployments of approximately 250 sailors and officers in assignments ranging from support to the TWA 847 hijacking in Beirut in 1985, to incursions into Khadafi's Gulf of Sidra in 1987, to other special operations in and around the Mediterranean. I was assigned to the Staff, Commander in Chief, US Atlantic Fleet, in 1988 as the National Sources and Sensors Tasking Officer. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1991 and assigned as Officer in Charge (OIC), Electronic Warfare (EW) Operational Programming Facility. As the OIC provided EW support to platform surveillance and protections systems installed in over 2600 aircraft, ships, and submarines, Navy-wide. I declined promotion to Commander in 1995, electing instead to retire from the Navy to pursue a career in industry supporting DoD programs and systems. My 26 years of service to the United States Navy will always be remembered among the best of years of my life.
