About Richard Joseph Hopwood, 81

September 2, 2016

Richard Joseph Hopwood of Pocasset, who taught at Bourne High School for more than 30 years, died at home August 27. He was 81.

He was married to Dorothy (Wilson) Hopwood for 41 years. Ms. Hopwood died in 2004.

Born in Provincetown, he was the son of Richard and Mary (Roderick) Hopwood. He graduated from Provincetown High School in 1949 and went on to join the ROTC program at Northeastern University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering in 1953.

Mr. Hopwood and his wife settled in Gray Gables, where they started their family in the early 1960s. They later settled in Pocasset.

Mr. and Mrs. Hopwood purchased Maco’s Bait and Tackle in 1970. What began as a small bait and tackle shop grew into the largest supplier of bait across the south coast of Massachusetts and Cape Cod.

Mr. Hopwood retired in 1996 from Bourne High School, where he was often seen on the sidelines of various sports.

A music lover, he spent many years near a piano singing his favorite tunes. He would sing the classics at the former Dolphin Inn. Mr. Hopwood and his pianist, Al Russo, performed various gigs around the surrounding area. He was also asked to sing at weddings.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John J. Hopwood, Manuel J. Hopwood and Reggie J. Hopwood; and his sisters, Mary L. Merrill and Marion Mitchell.

A celebration of life was held Friday, September 2, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pocasset.
