Frederick Harry “Coach” Comings died peacefully at home on Thursday, August 12, 2010. He was born in 1921.

Coach Comings graduated from Foxboro High School in the class of 1939 and served in the Navy during WWII. After returning from the war, he attended the University of New Hampshire where he was a member of both the football and hockey teams. He was a member of the only UNH football team to ever go to a bowl game. In addition he coached the freshman hockey team during his junior and senior years at UNH.

Upon graduation he accepted a position in the Bourne School system as a teacher and coach. For many years he coached football, hockey, and baseball and then became the Athletic Director. In 1963 he became principal and held that position at the Bourne Grammar School, the Lyle School on the Base and the Cody Junior High School.

Coach Comings was a member of the Foxboro High School Hall of Fame, the UNH Hall of Fame and the Bourne High School Athletic Hall of Fame. As a member of the Bourne Recreation Authority, he was instrumental in getting the John Gallo Ice Arena built so the children of Bourne didn’t have to travel to Hyannis to practice, He formed the John and Ethel Thorne Foundation in the mid 1960’s to provide scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Bourne and to help children on the Cape with mental disabilities.

Coach Comings was member of the Lions Club, the Shriners, the Masons and VFW Post 5988.

He retired in1983 and was recognized by the Bourne Alumni Association for dedicated service to students and families of the town of Bourne.

Visiting hours were held Monday August 16th from 4 to 7 PM at the Nickerson Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd Bourne. His funeral service was held at 9:45 AM Tuesday August 17th at the funeral home. Burial followed at the Massachusetts National Cemetery with Navy Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bourne High School Athletics, c/o Mrs. Jean White, 75 Waterhouse Rd. Bourne, MA 02532.
