Robert E. Eldridge, 80 (Ret. Bourne FD), a lifelong resident of Bourne, died Friday, June 20, 2014 at his home in Pocasset after a long and courageous battle with cancer while surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was the son of the late William H. and Florence (Watson) Eldridge. Graduating from Bourne High School in 1953, Bob worked for Eldridge Lumber Company, a company founded by his family. He entered in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and served from 1953 until his discharge in 1957 as electrician’s mate. He served onboard the U.S.S. Canberra (CAG-2) and the U.S.S. Ashain (AKA-55)

After his military service, Bob joined the Bourne Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter. He eventually became full-time and quickly rose through the department ranks. Bob retired as Chief in 1999 after 37 years of service. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local # 1717, Bourne and the Retired Fire Chiefs Association.

After his retirement from the fire department, Bob worked as a limousine driver for Merlino Limousine Service as well as several funeral homes throughout southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod.

Bob was a member of the Dewitt Clinton Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Sandwich and the Weary Travelers Club in Monument Beach. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his trips to Foxwoods and scratching lottery tickets with his son Bobby. Bob particularly enjoyed having coffee everyday at the Market Basket Café.

His funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 25th at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment was in Oakland Grove Cemetery, Bourne.
