John F. Reid, Jr.

Class of 1959

Unfortunately, I was not able to graduate due to famiy hardships. However, I have truly been blessed by the academic skills aquired while a student at Booker T. My Bio. follows:

John Reid

Director of the Mentor and Student Diversity Programs

California State University at Fullerton, California


John received an A.S., Electro-Mechanical Engineering from Long Beach City College. He received a B.S., Human Services and M.S., Clinical Counseling (MFCC) degrees from California State University, Fullerton. He has been in coordinator and director positions at California State University, Fullerton for fifteen years.

He was a pioneer in retention and graduation of the ‘at risk’ student population
and student athletes. After several years of research in student retention, Mr. Reid founded the Black Ombudsman Program and the Student Diversity Programs at California State University, Fullerton. The Student Diversity Program was recently evaluated by an independent source and found to be in the top 1% of retention programs nationally working with the ‘at risk’ student population. The Student Diversity Program was identified as one of the four top ranked institutional programs supporting "Minority Student Retention - 2007" in America.

John Reid has been a Manufacturing and Test Engineer for Rockwell International. In these capacities, he worked on the Shuttle, GPS and Teal Rudy satellite production articles. He was the Supervisor and later Manager of the GPS Electronic Fabrication and Assembly areas and Supervisor for the Engineering College Unit Program.

Mr. Reid developed and founded the 12 acre West Long Beach, California, Athletic Association and 4-H Club.

He retired from the U. S. Navy after more than twenty years (and 25 days) of distinguished service. During this “career,” he was the youngest Chief Petty Officer in the U. S. Navy. He also retired at an early age.

In 1959, while the U. S. Navy (after leaving Booker T. Washington High School) and 1996 respectively, he was honored by the NAACP and nominated for the prestigious Spingarn Medal and received the Orange County, California NAACP Citizen of Distinction Award.
