Born in 1942 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Roger Lee Hall is an acclaimed American composer and musicologist. His journey into music began early with his first music training in the glee club at the Eastern Military Academy at Oheka Castle. His passion for songwriting was evident even during his high school years at Bloomfield High School, New Jersey, from where he graduated in 1960.

He further honed his musical talent with a Bachelor's degree in music theory and composition from Rutgers University in 1970. Postgraduation, Hall completed his Master's at Binghamton University in 1972. At Case Western Reserve University, where he pursued Ph.D. studies, he also taught American popular music.

Known for his contribution to music as an instructor, critic, author, and preservationist, Hall has made significant impacts on the American music scene. He served as a music instructor at Stonehill College and the Brookline Adult and Community Education Program in Massachusetts during the late 1970s. In 1998, he began working as a film music critic and editor of the online magazine, Film Music Review, and is also a lecturer and consultant on various topics related to American music.

As a devoted music preservationist, Hall has dedicated his efforts to preserve the music of the Shakers, resulting in him becoming an authority on the subject. He has written over 50 publications on Shaker music and other music from earlier America, notably in the PineTree Multimedia Editions series. Within his work, he has also drawn attention to other significant musical genres and personalities like George Gershwin, Christmas music in America, and Old-Time Radio.

He has shown a keen interest in community music, hosting several cable television series, radio programs, and even his own radio program, In the Mood, playing music from the 1930s to 1950s. Hall also serves as the director of the American Music Recordings Collection (AMRC) and the Center for American Preservation (CAMP), both devoted to preserving lesser-known music.

As a composer, Hall's notable works include the Great American Folk Song "Simple Gifts", "Dedication: Singing in Stoughton (1762-1992)", and "Variations on a Shaker Marching Tune". He has been listed in several ranking directories such as the International Who's Who in Music and Who's Who in America.
