Born on July 15, 1933, in Trenton, New Jersey, Robert Carl Stempel is a notable alumnus of Bloomfield High School, New Jersey. This gifted individual embarked on his journey to greatness by fixing his fellow students' cars to earn his college tuition.

Stempel had a successful career at General Motors (GM), climbing the ladder to become the company's Chairman and CEO from August 1990 to November 1992. He had joined GM in 1958 as a design engineer at Oldsmobile. The esteemed engineer played a significant role in developing the front-wheel-drive Toronado and was part of the creative team behind the first catalytic converter.

Beyond his high school education, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1955. He later attended night classes, earning an MBA from Michigan State University in 1970. He later received an honorary doctorate from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, demonstrating his dedication to furthering his education.

Stempel's mark extended beyond General Motors. He was also a member of multiple engineering associations such as the National Academy of Engineering, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Engineering Society of Detroit. Furthermore, he served as the first Chairman of the American Quality Foundation and was a member of various other boards and councils, underlining his commitment to improving the industry and society at large.

Robert Stempel passed away on May 7, 2011, at the age of 77, leaving behind a significant legacy that continues to inspire many today.
