What is Alaa Abdelnaby (born 1968) known for?

Alaa Abdelnaby is a well-known figure in the basketball world, recognized not only for his playing career but also for his ongoing contributions as a broadcaster and analyst. Born on June 24, 1968, in Alexandria, Egypt, Abdelnaby moved to the United States with his family when he was just two years old. With roots in Bloomfield, New Jersey, Abdelnaby's passion for basketball was kindled during his time at Bloomfield High School.

Gaining recognition early in his career, Abdelnaby clinched titles as a McDonald's All-American and a Parade All-American. His skills on the court led him to Duke University, where he had a breakout year as a senior, averaging 14.9 points and 6.7 rebounds during the regular season. Despite some off-court problems and his candid take on academic rigors, Abdelnaby marked his time at Duke with a third-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selection.

Continuing his career, Abdelnaby was the 25th pick of the 1990 NBA draft, selected by the Portland Trail Blazers. His journey in the NBA spanned numerous teams, with stints at the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, and Philadelphia 76ers. His playing career also took him overseas and to other leagues, including the Continental Basketball Association (CBA).

Leaving a legacy as one of the only two Egyptian-born players in NBA history, Abdelnaby's career highlights include overall points of 1465 (5.7 ppg), 846 rebounds (3.3 rpg), and 85 assists (0.3 apg). Check out his comprehensive stats at NBA.com and Basketball-Reference.com.

Transitioning to a role as a basketball broadcaster and analyst for NBCS Philadelphia, CBS Sports Network, and Westwood One Radio, Abdelnaby continues to contribute to the sport in a meaningful way.
