About Orlando “Landa” Schraub, age 90, of Bay City, Texas, passed away on March 13, 2016.
Landa was born June 29, 1925, in Seguin, Texas, to the late Albert and Lydia Sophie Mertz Schraub. Upon graduation from Seguin High School, in 1943, Landa volunteered into the U. S. Navy. He was stationed aboard the battleship USS. Idaho in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, and shelling of New Guineas, Iwo Jima, Palau Islands and Okinawa. His ship took part in the surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay to end World War Two.
Upon separation from the service, he entered Texas Lutheran University, where he was a four year letterman in football, golf and two year letterman in baseball. Landa played for the Seguin White Sox minor league baseball team and was also elected into the “Texas Lutheran Hall of Honor.” He received his Master’s Degree from Texas State University. After graduation from college, he coached in Brenham one year, three years at Bay City Junior High, 16 years at Bay City High School and was Asst. Principal at Bay City High School for 16 years.
Landa is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, “Peggy” Schraub of 46 years; his brother, Cleburne Schraub; sisters, Lillian Erskine, Violet Vivroux and Olivia Schraub; and granddaughter, Julie Schraub.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marcella of 19 years; daughter, Cindy (Stuart) Johnson; son, Craig (Carla) Schraub; step-daughter, Brigid (Naiser) Lamprecht; step-son, Jim (Jeanne) Naiser; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Landa was a devoted Lutheran and member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he served as an Usher for 58 years, Head Usher for 39 years and on the church council numerous times. He is a past member of Texas High School Coaches Association, Texas Secondary Principal Association, National Principal Association, Life Member of V.F.W., Texas State Teachers Association, and Matagorda County Teachers Association.
The family will receive visitors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 17, 2016, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bay City with the Rev. Jared Stillions officiating.
Burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Schraub, Jake Johnson, T. John Crow, Nate Boyd, Doug Hinson, Thomas Orsak, Mike Vivroux and Rupert Franzisko.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
