About Jay Anderson “J-Bird” Mallard passed away on September 12, 2018, while traveling with his wife, Janet, to his stepson Zach’s wedding in Ohio.

“J-Bird” was born February 11, 1943, in Bay City, Texas to Richard “Dick” and Ruth Mallard. Both predeceased Jay.

He is survived by his sister, Sally Mallard Rogers of Bay City; his wife, Janet Mallard of Houston and Angleton; his son, Richard Mallard of San Marcos; his daughter, Cristina Mallard Bru of Ohio; his grandsons, Roman Bru and Christopher Jay Bru; his granddaughters, Iliana Mallard and Olivia Mallard; and his stepsons, Zach Stebbins, Rich Stebbins, Jeff Stebbins.

Jay met the love of his life, Janet Mallard, they married June, 2010. They loved to travel and they welcomed each other’s family and friends. They were looking forward to settling into their new home in Angleton. Jay was very proud of Janet; and, a very content family man.

Jay graduated from Bay City High School in 1961 and loved each and every one of his classmates. Jay attended every reunion he possibly could. Jay loved his community. Of Jay’s many friends, Kay Franks was a special friend.

J-Bird was loved by many, but had three “best friends” through life, G. P. “Geep” Hardy III; Albert “Buzzy” Riis Due and Richard Starnes. Geep and Jay attended Miss Tenie Holmes School together at age five; and, their friendship endured 70 years. Buzzy, Jay, Richard and Geep were friends for life and were brothers.

J-Bird graduated from Texas State University (Southwest Texas State) with a degree in Music. He loved to sing and had the voice of an angel, not because of the quality of his voice, but because he was an angel. Jay was kind and sweet and shared his happiness with friends and strangers, alike. Jay was Methodist by faith; but, was non-denominational when it came to sharing his love of music with the church.

J-Bird received his law degree from St. Mary’s Law School in December 1971 and practiced law in Angleton, Texas from April 20, 1972 until his death. He loved his clients and loved the practice of law.

Between college and law school, Jay served in the U. S. Army as an officer, serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged. After serving in Vietnam it was discovered he suffered the effects of Agent Orange. He received treatment from the V.A. and was given military disability. Jay specified that his body be donated to science for organ donation; and, for research about the effects of Agent Orange.

A memorial service will be scheduled after the family has returned from Ohio. The service will be a wonderful celebration of J-Bird’s life, filled with memories and love.
