About Me | The past ten years have been physically challenging, but professionally and personally rewarding, with the good far outweighing the bad. I feel incredibly blessed to have spent the past 44 years with my husband, Jim. Together we delight in our three children and nine grandchildren, and divide our time between San Francisco, Park City, Utah and Martha's Vineyard. As a professional artist, my painting career has soared in the past decade, with numerous gallery showings, private commissions and the publication of my first book, Natural Revelations. I recently finished my second museum solo exhibition and am now hard at work on a third. A committed arts and humanitarian activist, I work often with Jim to invest in documentary films. We're very proud to have received an Academy Award in 2005 for our role as executive producers on the film Born Into Brothels and have helped to form an angel group called Impact Partners that invests in documentaries committed to social change. The past decade was not without its trials. Nine years ago, doctors discovered I had severe mercury poisoning, from years of eating lots of sushi and other fish dishes. And, four years ago, I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, mostly likely from being bitten by a contaminated mosquito. I was extremely ill for several years, all but incapacitated from pain and dysfunction. Through traditional and alternative medicine, as well as my enduring faith, I have made a remarkable recovery, although I still have daily struggles. These challenges have given me new purpose, both in and out of the studio. My newfound interest in environmental health issues encouraged Jim and me to executive produce the documentary Under Our Skin, which was short-listed this year for an Oscar, as well as Mercury Rising, a short documentary attached to the feature film The Cove, which itself won best documentary at the 2010 Academy Awards. I am happily and actively engaged in my communities: I serve on the board of the Harvard Divinity School and the Salt Lake Film Center, am a trustee of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and co-founded the charity-based The Christian Center in Park City. Lastly, my illnesses have shaken me out of my comfort level as an artist, so that the pieces I'm creating now are more impassioned and personally meaningful than anything I've created before. UPDATE: Dear Friends, In the midst of these unsettling times, I am feeling evenmore connected and grateful for our shared memories. I divulged my health challenges and battle to survive chronic Lyme disease and mercury poisoning at the last Reunion. Once again I am reminded of what that experience taught me and how it ultimately affected my personal views and painting technique from total realism to contemporary abstraction. Post illness my first works were titled the Contemplation Series in deference to the time I spent in solitude rebuilding my strength and spirit. Todays forced seclusion and wake up call to stay healthy has once again granted me the luxury of time to ponder what really matters. The clarity our seclusion affords is a gift and I pledge to truly appreciate, exalt, protect and preserve the beauty of the natural world through my art, and in every way I can. Now more than ever I'm also feeling unbelievably blessed to celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary with our three children and nine grandchildren. We continue to divide our time mostly between Park City, Utah – where we are still skiing - and Martha’s Vineyard where tennis and sailing are top of the list. Jim is no longer driving the company so we are spending less time in San Francisco. Within the last decade I have had the great fortune and joy of not only seeing my family grow and thrive, but also experiencing profound personal fulfillment and acclaim, reaching new heights in my professional career. I find inspiration all around and it is a joyful time of my life! I have been so fortunate to have solo shows in the US at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington DC and at the Manetti Shrem Museum at UC Davis. I’ve also had numerous international solo shows at major museums in Austria, Germany, Hungary and at the Russian State Museum in St Petersburg and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. A prominent arts and cultural director in Europe took interest in my art several years ago and it has been nonstop ever since. And now, I'm waiting to hear about prospective shows in Berlin and Venice. I attribute my good health to my growing awareness of natural healing – I’m gluten and dairy free, mostly vegetarian and fueled by tons of holistic herbs and my enduring faith. Impact Partners, the documentary film group we started twelve years ago, has continued to grow and has now produced over 120 documentaries on the environment, social change and health. We won another Oscar in 2017 for ICARUS (viewable on Netflix), which tells the story of Russian Olympic doping. I still continue to serve on the Deans Council of the Harvard Divinity School, Salt Lake Film Center’s Board, and the Advisory Board of the National Museum for Women in the Arts. We continue to support the International Justice Mission to fight sex trafficking and slave labor around the world and we co-founded a successful charity based model in the Christian Center of Park City that is making a great difference in our community. It is incredibly rewarding to watch it grow. Wishing you all the very best — let’s stay healthy and stay connected! You can reach me at info@susanswartz.com.
