About 84, died on December 24, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia after a long illness. Funeral arrangements and cremation were handled by MAYES WARD DOBBINS FUNERAL HOME of Marietta, GA. Mr. Mowry was a native of Pittsburgh, PA, where he was descended from one of the oldest families in Allegheny County. He graduated from Avonworth High School in 1941 and served during WWII in the Pacific Theatre as an LTJG in the United States Naval Reserve. After an honorable discharge, he graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA with a degree in History in 1948. The majority of Mr. Mowry's business career was spent in Florida (Miami, Maitland and St. Petersburg) working in investment banking. Upon retirement in 1994, he moved to Mount Pleasant, SC. In 2004, he moved to Atlanta, GA. Although Mr. Mowry spent much of his life outside of Pennsylvania, his heart and loyalties always remained with Pittsburgh. He was a passionate and devoted fan of the Steelers, Pirates and Pitt Panthers. Mr. Mowry was an avid writer and historian, publishing his memoir "A Faint Recollection" in 1997 and "The History of the Mowry Family, Volume II (1740-2000) in 2002. William J. Mowry is survived by his son, Philip S. Mowry of Houston, TX, by nephews Richard T. Gernert, Scott C. Mowry and Christopher B. Mowry, and nieces Sarah M. Boyle and Elisabeth G. Rosenblatt.
