What is Paul Overgaard known for?

Paul Philip Overgaard, born February 15, 1930, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, was an influential American politician and businessman. A renowned alumnus of Albert Lea High School, Overgaard left an indelible mark in his community and beyond. After graduating, he showed his mettle as a brave soldier during his service from 1948 to 1953 in the Korean War. Notably, on his 21st birthday, Overgaard showed exceptional bravery in battle, even after sustaining a gunshot wound. His courageous actions resulted in him being awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

After his military service, Overgaard embarked on a successful political career. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, he first got elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1962, representing the 9A district (present-day district 27A). In the 1964 and 1966 elections, Overgaard also secured victories, showing his popularity and effectiveness as a public servant.

His tenure in the Minnesota House of Representatives was marked by his contributions to several committees including the Civil Administration Committee, Employees Compensation Committee, Highways Committee, Recreation and Water Resources Committee, Taxes Committee and University and College Committee. Overgaard dutifully represented District 31A and made key decisions that steered the course of his community and state.

Building on his successful political career, Overgaard went on to represent District 9 (present-day district 27) in the Minnesota Senate from January 5, 1971, until January 1, 1973. Besides his political career, Overgaard was also a grain farmer and worked in the finance sector, specifically as an investment advisor for Mutual Funds Securities and as a vice president of Imperial Financial Services, Inc.

Overgaard passed away on February 4, 2022, leaving behind a notable legacy of service and dedication to his community, state, and country. His life’s work is a testament to his commitment to public service and the betterment of his community.
